I am impressed by a man who continues to attempt things after failure. I think that failure is a part of life. Sadly, many quit when we fail. This is a horrible mistake. I don’t think a “winner” is someone who “wins” all the time, I think a “winner” is someone who fails and falls, and does things wrong, and misses the mark but keeps trying. It is not that a winner doesn’t ever lose or fail, it is that a winner never quits.
A few years back I read something about Abraham Lincoln that impressed me. Today, we view Abraham Lincoln as a winner, a success! He was our 16th president after all! But this great success of a man also knew failure! He once said, “I do the very best I know how – the very best I can – and I mean to keep doing so.” Here is a little insight into this man’s life…
- 1831 – Failed in Business
- 1832 – Defeated for Legislature
- 1833 – Again Failed in Business
- 1834 – Elected to Legislature
- 1835 – Sweetheart Died
- 1836 – Had Nervous Breakdown
- 1838 – Defeated for Speaker
- 1840 – Defeated for Elector
- 1843 – Defeated for Congress
- 1846 – Elected to Congress
- 1848 – Defeated for Congress
- 1855 – Defeated for Senate
- 1856 – Defeated for Vice-President
- 1858 – Defeated for Senate
- 1860 – Elected President
Amongst the great victories, there were great failures. This did not stop Abraham Lincoln. Failure should not stop us either! So keep trying. If things aren’t working, don’t give up! Don’t quit. If you have to step back, reassess, then do so, but be determined to jump back in there! Don’t quit! Keep trying!
