Preparation – Part I

July 8, 2015 by Patrick Leave a Comment

“Remember, Jesus prepared 30 years for 3 years of ministry.”  This sentence ended the card my Assistant Pastor sent me shortly after I arrived to college. I don’t really remember anything else Brother Butler wrote in the card. He was encouraging me to work hard and learn all I could.

Preparation is important.  We want our doctors to be prepared before ever performing any surgery on us.  We want the pilot of the plane to be prepared before attempting to take off.  We even want our barber (or hair stylist) prepared before taking scissors to our head.  We should also want missionaries prepared before reaching the field!  For the next few posts, I am going to address the different ways we are preparing for what God has called us to do.

I arrived home last night at 1:00 AM.  It was after an intensive 2 day class on culture adaptation.  I (along with 6 other missionaries on deputation) read 5 books on cultural adaptation in preparation for this class.

Why prepare for culture adaptation?

Because culture shock is real!  There is an adjustment that must be made by the missionary.  This is not an easy adjustment, but it is necessary.  For hours we asked questions to our mentor (a veteran missionary who served in Peru).  We received instruction on how to alleviate the stresses of adjusting to a new culture.  The class is not required, it is something that I feel is vital to learn.  Each month, we have classes that are offered in an attempt to further prepare us for the mission field.  We will be addressing language acquisition in the next class.  By spending hours of reading books, discussing processes, asking questions, and addressing concerns we are preparing for the field.  This class does not eliminate the coming culture shock, but it will alleviate some of the stresses that are brought on by culture adjustment.

One of the books offered a great illustration.  A monkey was at the shore of an island.  he looked down and saw a fish that was seemingly struggling in the water.  The monkey stooped down and “rescued” the fish from the “certain peril” that the fish was in.  He took the fish to dry land where the fish could rebound from swimming so hard.  The fish died.  The monkey’s intention was to help the fish.  The fish viewed the monkey’s actions has harmful.  The monkey was trying to be a friend but the fish saw the monkey as an enemy.  Why?  Because they came from two different views of what was “normal”.  This is just an illustration, but what is attractive in our culture may seem repulsive in another culture.  Preparation for culture adaptation is very important for any missionary on his way to the field!

This is just one way we are preparing for what God has called us to do.  More posts are to come.  Check back next week!

Continuing A Full Schedule

Each month our support increases. Each month we see God move.  Each month has opportunities to serve. June was a blessing for us. We were able to share our burden in churches, we have four churches partner with us and several more tell us they are interested in doing so! We saw God work in our OG Camp (more on that below). We were able to reunite with an old college friend as well as meet many new friends.
The whole month was a blessing!

July is a very busy month as well. We have a full schedule and are excited at each opportunity to share what God has done in our hearts! We are scheduled to be in Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Please pray that God use each meeting for His glory and that God would continue to build our support!

Serving Together,

Our Generation Camp

We had our OG Camp in June.  We had over 70 campers this year!  The emphasis of our camp is world missions.  Our theme was “Ready for Either”, meaning we are ready for service of sacrifice!  Each day we had missionaries lead sessions on the country they serve in (or will be serving in).  We had sessions on Argentina, India, Peru, Bolivia, Morocco, South Africa, and China. We had preaching from pastors and missionaries each day. We had 27 campers sign our missionary pledge, giving their lives to the cause of proclaiming the Gospel to all nations!  God moved in the hearts of our campers.  Please pray for them them that they will follow through with their commitments to our God!  Our God is worthy!

Where is Argentina?

July 1, 2015 by Patrick Leave a Comment

Yes, this may seem like an obvious question, but it is something I am asked from time to time.  We are continuing in our blog series, “Questions I am asked” after a two week break (our posts for those two weeks were on our 11th anniversary and a review of camp).  This question is a bit elementary, but it is asked frequently.

Argentina is in southern South America.  It borders Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Atlantic Ocean.  Argentina has 3,100 miles long coastline and covers a total area of 1,073,518 square miles making it the eighth largest country of the world.  The Andes Mountain straddle the Argentine Chilean border.  Argentina is vastly different from the north to the south.  In the north, Argentina is sub-tropic while in the south sub-polar.  Southern Argentina (and Chile) is known as the Patagonia.  It is home to fantastic mountain peaks, vast and empty steppes, glaciers and icefields, and stunning national parks. It is an incredible display of the natural beauty of God’s creation, virtually untouched by the hands of man.  Ushuaia, Argentina is the world’s southernmost city and is a busy port; cruises and tours to Antarctica (just south of Argentina) also depart from this seaport.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is almost the same distance to the equator as Los Angeles, California.  The city is on the Rio De La Plata (which looks more like a bay than a river).  1/3 of the country’s population live in Buenos Aires.

Argentina is a beautiful and vast county, but that is not why we are going there.  Argentines need Jesus!  Jesus told His Disciples, “The harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few…”.  This can certainly be said of Argentina!  Pray with me to the LORD of the harvest for more laborers to be sent to this vast mission field!

2015 Our Generation Camp Review

June 23, 2015 by Patrick Leave a Comment

We had our OG Camp in June.  We had over 70 campers this year!  The emphasis of our camp is world missions.  Our theme was “Ready for Either”, meaning we are ready for service of sacrifice!  Each day we had missionaries lead sessions on the country they serve in (or will be serving in).  We had sessions on Argentina, India, Peru, Bolivia, Morocco, South Africa, and China. We had 27 campers sign our missionary pledge.  The missionary pledge is something we take very serious.  By signing the pledge, you are changing your position from “stay” to “go”.  It is recognizing God’s call on your life and verbalizing your surrender to God’s plan.  These 27 campers signed the pledge, giving their lives to the cause of proclaiming the Gospel to all nations!  God moved in the hearts of our campers.  Please pray for them them that they will follow through with their commitments to our God!  Our God is worthy!
