This is one of the highlights of the year. The Summit is an opportunity for you to spend time with missionaries that are reaching around the world! This would be one of the best things that you can do for your youth group, for your singles in college, and for your church. If you take your your young people (youth or college/career) to one thing in the up coming year, I suggest it be the Summit!
August 2014 Missions Letter
Summer on the Move
We have had an incredible month! Summer is a time where things can slow down, but not for us! God has blessed us with more eager partnering churches who are dedicated to world evangelism! It has been a month where we have been with old friends and made new friends! Most importantly, Jesus has been magnified, the need has been seen and felt.
August will begin a long journey across the country as we travel from church to church from here (Georgia), to California and many states along the way. Please pray for safety and that many would see the need in Argentina. Pray that God would call men to world missions! We are excited to share the burden God has placed on our hearts.
Remember to pray for the millions of people in Argentina who are eternally lost. Pray that they would hear the Gospel of Jesus before it is too late!
Serving Together,
Patrick, Leslie, Lily, Piper, and Ivy Henry
Fire in La Plata, Argentina
On July 24, 2014, I received news of a horrible tragedy in La Plata, Argentina. Iglesia Bautista El Faro (Lighthouse Baptist Church) was engulfed in flames. The fire destroyed the auditorium and everything in it, except for 3 things. The pulpit, a computer, and the Pastor’s Bible all came out with no signs of having been in the fire! No one was harmed in the fire, but they did suffer great loss. Argentina is a great place where God is doing something. This is a setback, but we know that a church is not made up of wood and nails. A church is the people. The real tragedy is that many places in Argentina do not have such a church.
Keep Trying
I am impressed by a man who continues to attempt things after failure. I think that failure is a part of life. Sadly, many quit when we fail. This is a horrible mistake. I don’t think a “winner” is someone who “wins” all the time, I think a “winner” is someone who fails and falls, and does things wrong, and misses the mark but keeps trying. It is not that a winner doesn’t ever lose or fail, it is that a winner never quits.
A few years back I read something about Abraham Lincoln that impressed me. Today, we view Abraham Lincoln as a winner, a success! He was our 16th president after all! But this great success of a man also knew failure! He once said, “I do the very best I know how – the very best I can – and I mean to keep doing so.” Here is a little insight into this man’s life…
- 1831 – Failed in Business
- 1832 – Defeated for Legislature
- 1833 – Again Failed in Business
- 1834 – Elected to Legislature
- 1835 – Sweetheart Died
- 1836 – Had Nervous Breakdown
- 1838 – Defeated for Speaker
- 1840 – Defeated for Elector
- 1843 – Defeated for Congress
- 1846 – Elected to Congress
- 1848 – Defeated for Congress
- 1855 – Defeated for Senate
- 1856 – Defeated for Vice-President
- 1858 – Defeated for Senate
- 1860 – Elected President
Amongst the great victories, there were great failures. This did not stop Abraham Lincoln. Failure should not stop us either! So keep trying. If things aren’t working, don’t give up! Don’t quit. If you have to step back, reassess, then do so, but be determined to jump back in there! Don’t quit! Keep trying!
Formosa
Formosa is located in the northeast of Argentina. It is on the banks of the Paraguay River. Formosa is the capital city of the Formosa Province. The city, which is just across the river from Paraguay has a culture close to that of Paraguay. The name most likely comes from an archaic version of the Spanish word, “Hermosa” (which means beautiful). It is a land of swamps, grassy plains, and tidelands. It is known to have one of the biggest concentration and variety of birds as well as South American caimans (similar to an alligator).
All that being true, it is the people in Formosa that we are most interested in. The city boasts a population of 250,000 people. There is a strong aboriginal population, especially the Tobas who live in the surrounding areas of the city. These people need the truth of Jesus! Please pray for God to send forth laborers that will faithfully proclaim the Truth in Formosa!
